Keep Dancing This Fall! https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/having-summer-fun-at-nans-keep-dancing-this-fall/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6670 The summer sun may still be shining bright, but we’re already getting excited for what comes next, the fall dance season at Nan’s! Whether you joined us for our summer camps, tried a new dance style for the first time, or simply discovered how much fun it is to move to the beat with new friends, we hope you had a blast.

If you loved the energy, creativity, and confidence-building fun of dancing at Nan’s this summer, we’ve got great news: the fun doesn’t stop when summer ends. In fact, fall is one of the most exciting times to become a dancer.

A New Season Means New Opportunities

When school starts back, it’s the perfect time to settle into a fresh routine, and for many of our students, dance is a favorite part of their weekly schedule. Fall classes at Nan’s offer structure, growth, and excitement as we build on the fun we had over the summer and get ready for a new season of progress.

During the school year, students have the chance to:

  • Join weekly classes that help develop technique and confidence
  • Reconnect with friends they met over the summer (or meet new ones)
  • Prepare for performances that showcase their hard work
  • Set goals and see real improvement as the weeks go on

There’s something special about seeing familiar faces, stretching your skills, and showing up each week for a class that makes you feel strong and supported.

Dancing Through the School Year

As fall begins and school picks up, it’s easy to fill your calendar with homework, sports, and other commitments. But dance isn’t just another activity, it’s a place to unwind, express yourself, and stay active in a fun and encouraging environment.

At Nan’s, we work hard to make dance a positive, uplifting part of your child’s routine. Our classes give students something to look forward to each week, whether they’re leaping across the floor in ballet or mastering sharp footwork on tap. Plus, dance supports focus, discipline, and self-confidence, which can help in the classroom too.

And let’s not forget the joy of moving to music, the challenge of learning choreography, and the friendships that grow stronger over time. Those moments matter, especially as kids grow and navigate new school years.

From Campers to Committed Dancers

We often hear from families who say their child “just wanted to try dance camp” and end up asking, When can I come back?”

If that sounds familiar, now’s the time to continue the journey. Fall classes give campers the chance to:

  • Build on the skills they started learning during summer
  • Explore new styles or stick with the one they love
  • Gain a deeper understanding of technique and movement
  • Begin a path toward long-term confidence and stage experience

Some of our most passionate dancers got their start in summer camps, and their growth during the school year has been incredible to watch.

For Parents: A Safe and Supportive Space

We know that for parents, the decision to continue classes during the school year comes down to more than just fun, it’s about finding an environment that’s safe, supportive, and structured.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we create a space where students can:

  • Learn from experienced, caring instructors
  • Build lasting friendships and social confidence
  • Express themselves creatively in a positive setting
  • Be part of a larger community that values respect and growth

And because our schedule includes options for multiple age groups and experience levels, there’s something for every dancer, from those just beginning to those ready to take the stage.

Looking Ahead to Performances and Progress

While summer is full of creative play and skill-building, fall is when the magic of steady progress begins to take shape. As the season moves forward, our dancers start preparing for performances, recitals, and opportunities to shine in front of an audience.

There’s nothing quite like seeing your child walk onto the stage with pride in their heart and a smile on their face, knowing how far they’ve come since their first class.

Fall classes help lay the foundation for those milestone moments and we’d love to help your dancer get there.

Don’t Let the Rhythm Stop Now

If your child found joy, confidence, or a new sense of purpose through dance this summer, don’t let that momentum fade away with the season. Dancing into fall is the best way to keep those skills sharp, those friendships growing, and that creative spark alive.

At Nan’s School of Dance, every season is a new chapter filled with movement, learning, and joy. Whether your child is continuing from summer camp or stepping into the studio for the first time this fall, we’re ready to welcome them with open arms.

From Rehearsal to Performance: The Complete Dancer’s Checklist https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/from-rehearsal-to-performance-the-complete-dancers-checklist/ Sun, 21 Apr 2024 16:12:42 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6139 Dancing is not just an art; it’s a journey from the first step in the rehearsal studio to the final bow on the stage. It requires dedication, passion, and a meticulous approach to preparation. Whether you’re a budding ballet dancer or a seasoned hip-hop enthusiast, competing can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. But fear not! With the right guidance and a comprehensive checklist, you can navigate the dance competition season with grace and confidence.

Preparation Begins at the Studio

The foundation of a successful performance is laid in the countless hours spent in the dance studio. It’s where skills are honed, routines are memorized, and teamwork is built. The key is consistent practice, not just going through the motions but actively working on improving technique, strength, and expression.

Understand Your Dance: Knowing every step, beat, and emotion of your dance is crucial. Immerse yourself in the music and the story you’re telling through your movements.

Feedback is Golden: Regular feedback from your instructors can guide your practice sessions. Work on the areas they highlight and incorporate their advice into your routine.

Physical and Mental Well-being

A dancer’s body is their instrument, and like any fine-tuned instrument, it requires care and maintenance to perform optimally.

Nutrition and Hydration: Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated are essential, especially as competition day approaches. Fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to endure long rehearsals and recover faster.

Mental Preparation: The mental aspect of preparing for a competition is just as important as the physical. Visualization techniques, meditation, and positive affirmations can help ease anxiety and boost confidence.

The Week Before: Final Preparations

The week before the competition is a critical time for final preparations. It’s not just about rehearsing the routine; it’s about ensuring that every detail is polished to perfection.

Costume and Makeup: Ensure your costume fits perfectly and all accessories are accounted for. Practice your makeup and hair routine to ensure there are no surprises on the day of the performance.

Rehearsal with Props and Costumes: If your routine involves props or specific costumes, practice with them to ensure you’re comfortable and everything flows smoothly.

Competition Day: The Checklist

The day has finally arrived. Nerves are high, but so is the excitement. Having a checklist can help ensure that nothing is forgotten amidst the buzz of competition day.

Essentials Bag: Pack a bag with all your essentials—costume, makeup, hair accessories, spare tights, and any props you need for your routine. Don’t forget snacks and water to keep you energized and hydrated.

Warm-Up and Stretch: Give yourself ample time to warm up and stretch before your performance. This not only prepares your body but also helps calm your nerves.

Post-Performance Reflection

After the adrenaline of the performance wears off, take time to reflect on the experience. What went well? What could be improved? Use this as a learning opportunity to grow as a dancer.

Celebrate Your Achievement: Regardless of the outcome, celebrate the hard work and dedication you’ve put into reaching this point. Every performance is a step forward in your dance journey.

Feedback and Growth: Seek feedback from your instructors and peers. Constructive criticism is invaluable for your growth as a dancer.

Ongoing Growth: Beyond the Performance

Transitioning from rehearsal to performance is a journey of growth for every dancer. By following this checklist, you can navigate the process with confidence and grace. Remember, the goal is not only to perform flawlessly but to connect with the art of dance, conveying emotion and telling a story that resonates with your audience. Dance is a celebration of movement, a form of expression that transcends words, and a discipline that demands both physical and mental strength. Whether you’re stepping onto the stage for the first time or the hundredth, the magic of performance is a testament to your dedication and love for dance.

Effective Practice Routines for Dance Competitions https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/effective-practice-routines-for-dance-competitions/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 16:12:33 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6136 Competition season is an exhilarating time for dancers. It’s a chance to showcase skills, express creativity, and celebrate months of hard work. However, the journey to the stage is paved with dedication, precision, and effective practice routines. At Nan’s School of Dance, a strong emphasis is placed on nurturing students’ growth and ensuring their success in dance competitions. This commitment to excellence is evident in their approach to practice routines, which are designed to enhance performance and instill confidence.

The Importance of Practice

Practice is the cornerstone of any dancer’s journey, especially when preparing for competitions. It’s about more than just repeating steps; it’s about refining technique, building stamina, and perfecting performance quality. At Nan’s School of Dance, practice routines are crafted to challenge and inspire students, encouraging them to push beyond their limits and achieve their personal best.

Understanding the Choreography

The first step in an effective practice routine is a deep understanding of the choreography. This means breaking down each movement, understanding its purpose, and recognizing how it contributes to the overall story or theme of the piece. Nan’s instructors emphasize the importance of intention behind each movement, encouraging dancers to connect emotionally with the choreography.

Technical Precision

Technical skills are the foundation of a dancer’s performance. Practice routines at Nan’s include targeted exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and control. These exercises are tailored to the demands of the competition choreography, ensuring that dancers have the physical capabilities to execute their routines flawlessly.

Stamina and Endurance

Competitions often require dancers to perform multiple routines back-to-back, highlighting the need for excellent stamina and endurance. Nan’s practice routines include cardiovascular training and rehearsal blocks that mimic the competition schedule, preparing dancers for the physical demands of the event.

Performance Quality

Captivating an audience and judges is about more than just technical prowess; it’s about performance quality. Nan’s School of Dance places a strong emphasis on expression, musicality, and dynamics. Dancers are encouraged to practice with full performance energy, focusing on facial expressions, body language, and the ability to connect with the audience.

Feedback and Reflection

Growth as a dancer involves not only practice but also the ability to reflect on feedback. Nan’s instructors provide constructive criticism to help students identify areas for improvement. Dancers are encouraged to videotape their rehearsals, allowing them to self-evaluate and adjust their performances accordingly.

Rest and Recovery

An often overlooked aspect of effective practice routines is the importance of rest and recovery. Nan’s School of Dance ensures that students understand the value of balancing intense practice with adequate rest, highlighting the role of rest in injury prevention and mental well-being.

The Path Forward in Dance Competitions

The journey to dance competition success is multifaceted, requiring dedication, technical skill, and emotional expressiveness. At Nan’s School of Dance, effective practice routines are the foundation upon which dancers build their competitive performances. Through a combination of technical drills, performance practice, feedback, and rest, Nan’s dancers are equipped to take the stage with confidence and grace. As they step into the spotlight, they know that every rehearsal, every piece of feedback, and every moment of rest has prepared them to shine. With Nan’s School of Dance, dancers not only compete; they captivate and inspire, showcasing the beauty and power of dance.

The Evolution of Dance: From Historical Roots to Modern Trends https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/the-evolution-of-dance-from-historical-roots-to-modern-trends/ Tue, 03 Oct 2023 14:09:36 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=5630 The Renaissance and Ballet

The Renaissance period witnessed the emergence of ballet as a distinct dance form. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Italian and French courts developed ballet into a highly stylized and structured art. You might have heard of famous ballets like “The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake.” These dances told beautiful stories with every leap and twirl.

Modern Dance Revolution

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a rebellion against the rigid structure of ballet. Modern dance pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham sought to break free from tradition. They introduced more expressive, improvisational movements, focusing on emotion and individuality rather than rigid technique.

Swinging to the Beat: Jazz and Hip-Hop

In the early 20th century, jazz music gave birth to a new form of dance. The Charleston, the Lindy Hop, and the Jitterbug became wildly popular during the Roaring Twenties. These energetic, syncopated dances reflected the spirit of the era.

Fast forward to the late 20th century, and hip-hop dance emerged as a cultural phenomenon. Originating in the Bronx, New York, this street dance style is characterized by its improvisational nature, intricate footwork, and urban flair. Celebrities like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson popularized hip-hop-inspired moves that we’ve come to know and love, such as the moonwalk and the pop and lock.

The Contemporary Dance Scene

Contemporary dance blends elements of ballet, modern dance, and even hip-hop, allowing for a wide range of creative expression. Dancers like Alvin Ailey and Pina Bausch have made significant contributions to the contemporary dance world, exploring themes that relate to our own feelings or emotions such as who we are, loss, love and many more.

The Power of Dance in Pop Culture

Social media platforms like TikTok have further accelerated the spread of dance trends, making it easier for anyone to become a dance sensation. With new moves and songs trending every week, it’s easy to pick up a new dance for fun. Pop culture has integrated dance more into our everyday lives, making it so anyone can participate!

The Future of Dance

Dance is a beautiful art form that has been passed down through generations. From the graceful ballet dancers of the past to the cool hip-hop moves of today, dance has a rich history full of stories and emotions. It’s important to remember that anyone can dance, even if you haven’t practiced.

So why Nan’s school of dance?

At Nan’s School of Dance, our goal is to provide top-quality instruction at a competitive price. 5 Ways to Enjoy Dance Outside of the Studio https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/5-ways-to-enjoy-dance-outside-of-the-studio/ Thu, 27 Jul 2023 16:12:30 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=5551 Dance is a beautiful art form that has been around for centuries. It is an expression of human emotion, creativity, and passion, and it can be enjoyed in many different ways. While dance classes are an excellent way to learn and improve your skills, there are plenty of ways to enjoy dance outside of the studio as well. Here are some ideas for how you can incorporate dance into your life outside of a formal dance class setting.

Attend a dance performance

One of the most obvious ways to enjoy dance outside of the studio is to attend a dance performance. There are plenty of options to choose from, including ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and more. Check your local performing arts center, theater, or dance company to see what performances are coming up in your area. You might be surprised by the variety of shows available.

Join a dance group or club

Another way to enjoy dance outside of the studio is to join a dance group or club. Many communities have dance groups that meet regularly to practice and perform different types of dance. Look for a group that matches your skill level and interests, and be sure to attend their events and performances.

Dance at a social event

Dancing at a social event is a great way to have fun and enjoy the company of others. Whether it’s a wedding, a party, or a night out with friends, dancing can be a fun and exciting way to let loose and express yourself. If you’re not comfortable dancing in public, start by dancing in a more private setting with a trusted friend or partner.

Take a dance-inspired workout class

If you want to stay fit and active while also enjoying dance, consider taking a dance-inspired workout class. Many gyms and fitness centers offer classes like Zumba, Barre, or dance cardio that incorporate dance moves into a high-energy workout. These classes are a great way to improve your fitness while also having fun.

Dance at home

Finally, don’t forget that you can always dance at home! Turn up your favorite music, clear some space, and let yourself move to the beat. Dancing at home can be a great way to relax and de-stress, and it’s a perfect activity for a rainy day or a lazy Sunday.

So why Nan’s school of dance?

Dance advice: Why am I cramping? https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/dance-advice-why-am-i-cramping/ Thu, 13 Jul 2023 16:12:15 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=5549 Dancing is a beautiful art form that requires a lot of strength, endurance, and flexibility.  However, even the most experienced dancers can suffer from cramping, which can be both painful and frustrating. That is why our team at Nan’s School of Dance have put together this blog to address cramping and give you some pointers on prevention and treatment.  We’re here to help answer the question – Why am I Cramping?

What is Cramping?

Cramping is an involuntary contraction of a muscle or group of muscles, causing pain, discomfort, and sometimes stiffness. Cramping can happen at any time, but it usually occurs during or after intense physical activity, such as dancing.

Why do Dancers Cramp?

  • Dehydration

Dehydration is one of the most common causes of cramping in dancers. When the body is dehydrated, it loses essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which are critical in maintaining muscle function. When these minerals are lost, the muscles can cramp, causing pain and discomfort.

  • Overuse

Dancers often overuse their muscles, which can cause them to fatigue and cramp. Dancing for extended periods, doing too many repetitions of the same movement, or performing challenging choreography without enough rest can cause muscle fatigue and cramping.

  • Lack of Warm-Up

Dancers need to warm up before any physical activity to increase blood flow to the muscles and joints, which helps prevent injuries and cramps. Skipping or inadequate warm-up can cause muscle tightness, which can lead to cramping.

  • Nutrient Deficiencies

Certain nutrients are crucial for maintaining healthy muscles, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Deficiencies in these minerals can lead to muscle cramping. Additionally, dancers who follow strict diets may not be getting enough calories and nutrients to sustain their physical activity, which can lead to cramping.

  • Inadequate Rest

Rest and recovery are essential for dancers, as it allows their muscles to recover and repair. Lack of rest can cause muscle fatigue, which can lead to cramping.

Prevention and Treatment of Cramping

  • Hydration

Dancers should drink plenty of water before, during, and after dancing to prevent dehydration. They should also consider sports drinks that contain electrolytes to replace minerals lost during physical activity.

  • Stretching and Warm-Up

Dancers should stretch and warm-up before any physical activity to increase blood flow to the muscles and prevent tightness and cramping.

  • Balanced Diet

Dancers should follow a balanced diet that provides adequate calories and essential nutrients like magnesium, calcium, and potassium to maintain healthy muscles.

  • Rest and Recovery

Dancers should prioritize rest and recovery to allow their muscles to repair and recover. Adequate sleep, massage, and foam rolling can also help prevent cramping.

  • Treatment

If cramping occurs, dancers should stop dancing and gently stretch the affected muscles. Applying heat or ice can also help relieve pain and discomfort. If cramping persists or becomes chronic, dancers should consult a healthcare professional.

Staying Healthy

Cramping is a common issue among dancers, but it can be prevented and treated. By following proper hydration, warm-up, nutrition, rest, and treatment, dancers can reduce the risk of cramping and maintain healthy muscles. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, so take care of your body and dance your heart out!

With almost 15 years of experience in the competition world among all three locations, the school offers an opportunity for committed dancers ages 2nd grade and up to further their training, showcase their skills, learn from different teachers and compete in dance.

The Goal of Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team aims to create a happy and nurturing environment for dancers to learn and excel. The goal is to provide an opportunity for committed dancers to showcase their skills, learn from different teachers and compete in dance. The company also aims to create a team atmosphere where students will learn to believe in others as much as they believe in themselves. While the trophies and accolades are not the main focus, the company believes that building skills and competing in an environment that develops self-confidence and self-worth are what matters most.

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team Background

Hillary White, the owner, and director of Nan’s School of Dance in Raleigh, has been dancing since she was a child. She competed during her college career at the national level and learned about discipline, drive, and what it takes to put a top-scoring routine on the stage. The owner of Nan’s School of Dance since 2012, she is committed to the Competitive Company Team and is thrilled to share her rich dance history with the students.

The Competitive Company Team is made up of dancers from 2nd-12th grade who are ready to take their passion for dance to the next level. Divided by age group and skill level, the Company environment fosters technique, drive and leading-edge choreography. While the Raleigh studio is relatively new to the competition world, the Greensboro and Yadkinville studios have almost 15 years of experience.

Our Teams: Nan’s Competitive Company Team

The company group is divided into age groups, and each group is named after a gemstone.

  • Garnet group: 2nd-4th graders
  • Sapphire group: 5th-7th graders
  • Emerald group: 8th-12th graders

Why gemstones? Garnet, Sapphire and Emerald hold value not only for what you see on the outside but also for what’s on the inside. Chosen for their durability and rarity, there are multiple factors that go into a gemstone’s worth. The Gemstones (in our cases) are strong because of the bond of their atomic and crystal structure. The Competitive Company Team likes to associate their team bond with strength. Much like the gems formed in the earth, our dance team leaves a lasting impression, is valuable due to its rarity and encapsulates a durable strength from the time and energy dedicated to dance.

Classes and Competition

At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe that dancers should have a well-rounded experience. Therefore, our Company classes are only held two nights per week, leaving the rest of the week open for students to participate in other extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports or youth groups.

  • For our Sapphire & Emerald dancers (5th-12th graders), we require Ballet, Jazz, Technique, Contemporary, and Hip Hop. (Tap and Pointe are optional)
  • Our younger group (Garnet) is required to take Jazz and Contemporary classes in addition to a Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo class.

We compete in three competitions each spring and bring large group dances as well as solos, duets, trios and small groups. We are excited to announce that for the ’23-’24 dance year, we will also be bringing a Production that ALL members will participate in.

Competitive Company Team Auditions

Nan’s School of Dance Competitive Company Team auditions will be held on Monday, May 1st, and Wednesday, May 3rd, at the studio. Dancers are required to attend both nights of auditions.

  • On May 1st, students will learn a dance and review skills.
  • On May 3rd, dancers will be divided into groups to audition in front of judges. They will perform the dance they learned and showcase their skills.

Making the Competitive Company Team

We can’t wait to welcome new team members each dance year. During our summer intensive classes, Company members will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills and techniques. Classes begin in August, where students will learn choreography for competitions.

Want to Learn More?

We will be holding a Company Information Session on Wednesday, April 12th at 7:15 pm for parents. At this meeting, we will discuss requirements for the Company, tuition and competition costs, audition information and more!

Dance-Friendly Movies For the Whole Family https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/dance-friendly-movies-for-the-whole-family/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 16:11:43 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=4269 Dance Movies to Curl Up to this Holiday Season

During the holiday season, Movie Nights are a staple. With colder temperatures and limited daylight, they are a way to keep your feet tapping while exposing your family to different genres of dance and music. At Nan’s School of Dance in Raleigh, we can’t help but twirl, jump and cheer for the following dance movies!

Leap!

Set in the late 1800s in France, this animated film follows a young orphan girl who discovers a passion for ballet. Taking a chance to audition for the world-renowned school of the Paris Opera Ballet, the main character (Felicie) embraces the idea that with hard work, practice and determination, you can do anything!

Singin’ in the Rain

A throwback, for sure, this musical masterpiece takes place in 1920s Hollywood. With some of the most iconic dance scenes in the film industry, the romantic musical comedy choreographed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen is something the whole family can enjoy. After watching this gem, we challenge you not to dance in the rain the next time a storm comes through the Raleigh area.

West Side Story (1961) Remake (2021)

Based on the complex relationship between two rival New York gangs in the mid-1950s, this movie’s plot becomes hugely complicated when two opposing members fall in love. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, “West Side Story” is a romantic drama with a legendary musical score and street battle turned dance-off. Interested in an even more modern twist? Take a look at the 2021 remake of the film starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler. While great movies, know that both are best suited for children 12+.

Happy Feet 1 (and 2)

Everybody needs a “heart song,” and Mumble (an emperor penguin) is no different. While the rest of his colony of penguins relies on their unique voices, Mumble expresses himself through tap dancing. With musical renditions from artists like Prince and Stevie Wonder, this eco-friendly cartoon film will have you and your family dancing around the living room. If you enjoy Happy Feet, make sure to watch Happy Feet Two — you won’t be disappointed!

An American Girl: Isabelle Dances Into the Spotlight

The eighth film in the American Girls series, this movie revolves around Isabelle Palmer, an aspiring dancer and fashion designer. Living in the shadow of her “perfect” older sister, Isabelle can’t help but feel out of place at her prestigious performing arts school. However, with the help of a famous ballerina, Isabelle finds her own way to shine.

Other Honorable Mentions

There are many other notable dance movies out there, but we wanted to create a list that was 100% family-friendly no matter the age. However, if you are looking for something to watch with your older dancers, consider these honorable mentions:

  • Footloose
  • Another Cinderella Story
  • Fame
  • Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo
  • Beat Street

The Brief History of Hip Hop https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/the-brief-history-of-hip-hop/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 16:11:04 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=4274 Hip Hop – A Dance Style Full of Culture and Great Beats

A dance style thought to have originated in the Bronx during the late 1960s — Hip Hop has a relatively short dance history when compared to other types. While the movements and roots date back further, this natural dance style started in the streets as a marriage of movement and music. With a blend of modern, tap, swing and African dancing, Hip Hop is a class of its own when it comes to embracing improvisation and culture.

What is Hip Hop?

Hip Hop is a style of street dance that evolved from Hip Hop culture and music. While Hip Hop was started as a freestyle dance to be performed in the streets, clubs, and underground venues of New York, it has evolved into a more choreographed dance style. Focusing on high energy and complex footwork, Hip Hop embraces versatility and attitude at its very core.

Hip Hop didn’t develop only on the East Coast, but New York City artists invented a musical style conducive to the dance form. In South Bronx, Kool Herc was the first DJ to make unique rhythms by playing two record machines with the same record on both. Those beats laid the foundation for Hip Hop dance culture and allowed young African American and Latino youth a way to express themselves through dance.

Evolution of Hip Hop

In the 1980s and 90s, Hip Hop grew in popularity. The idea of a social Hip Hop dance party started to emerge with both informal and formal competitions. People began to share this type of dance to create a sense of unity and use their culture to create art. With the help of television and shows like Soul Train, Hip Hop was presented to the masses showcasing the earliest dance crews.

Fast forward to the present, and you have East Coast Hip Hop, West Coast Hip Hop and a blend of both with American Hip Hop. Still commercially popular, Hip Hop dances often make their way to social media — The Dougie, The Wobble, The Monestary, Stanky Leg, and Walk It Out. At Nan’s Dance Studio in Raleigh, we offer classes to children of all ages who want to study these styles of Hip Hop. Focusing on the bounces and rocks of old-school dance moves, our instructors and their movements are grounded in the foundational grooves of the culture.
