Dance is an art form that requires discipline, respect, and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned dancer, understanding and practicing good dance etiquette is essential for maintaining a positive and productive environment in the studio. At Nan’s School of Dance, we emphasize the importance of proper behavior to ensure that everyone can learn and grow in a supportive setting. Here are some key do’s and don’ts to keep in mind during your dance classes.

What To Do:

Arrive on Time

Punctuality is a sign of respect for both your instructor and your classmates. Arriving on time allows you to participate in the full warm-up, which is crucial for preventing injuries and preparing your body for the class. If you happen to be late, enter quietly and join the class without disrupting the ongoing session.

Dress Appropriately

Wearing the right attire is not just about looking the part; it’s about safety and functionality. Ensure that you wear the appropriate dancewear for your class type, whether it’s ballet, jazz, hip-hop, or any other style. Comfort is optimal for practice, but dressing the part shows professionalism and that you’re preparing for competitions. We would recommend that you tie back your hair, and don’t wear long jewelry (such as long necklaces and loose bracelets) to avoid getting in your way during practice.

Respect Personal Space

Dance requires movement and often, close proximity to others. Be mindful of personal space and avoid bumping into or crowding your fellow dancers. If you’re practicing a formation, adjust your movements accordingly to ensure everyone has enough room to dance comfortably.

Clean Up After Yourself

After class, make sure to pick up any personal belongings, trash, or equipment you’ve used. This simple act of cleaning up helps maintain a tidy and organized studio, making it a pleasant space for everyone.

Encourage and Support Your Peers

A positive attitude goes a long way in creating a supportive community. Encourage and support your fellow dancers by offering constructive feedback, celebrating their achievements, and being a source of motivation. Remember, everyone is on their own journey and a little kindness can make a big difference.

Show Gratitude

Expressing gratitude towards your instructor and peers fosters a positive and respectful environment. A simple thank you at the end of class can go a long way in showing appreciation for their efforts and support.

What Not To Do:

Interrupting the Instructor

Listening to your instructor is the key for your learning and progression. Avoid talking when the instructor is giving instructions or demonstrating movements. If you have a question, wait for an appropriate moment, such as during a break or when the instructor invites questions. This helps maintain a focused and respectful atmosphere in the studio.

Using Your Phone During Class

Your phone can be a major distraction, not only to you but also to those around you. Keep your phone on silent or, better yet, leave it in your bag during class. Engaging fully with the session helps you get the most out of your time in the studio and shows respect for the learning environment.

Bringing Food or Drinks (Except Water) into the Studio

Food and sugary drinks can create a mess and attract pests, which is why they should be left outside the studio. Water, however, is essential for staying hydrated, so bring a bottle and take sips during breaks to keep your energy levels up.

Dirty Shoes

Your dance shoes are for the studio floor and wearing them outside can damage them and bring dirt into the studio. Have a designated pair of shoes for dancing and change into them once you arrive. This helps keep the studio floor clean and in good condition. If you like to use one pair of shoes, that’s fine too, as long as you’re mindful of what’s on the bottom of your feet before walking into the studio.

Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, but this can be detrimental to your own progress and self-esteem. Focus on your personal growth and set your own goals. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, and understand that each dancer has a unique path.

Remember to Have Fun

Good dance etiquette is fundamental in creating a respectful, productive, and enjoyable atmosphere in the studio. By following these do’s and don’ts, you contribute to a positive learning environment where everyone can thrive. At Nans Dance, we are committed to fostering a community where dancers can grow, learn, and express themselves through the beautiful art of dance. So, next time you step into the studio, remember these guidelines and dance with respect and joy.

Tips For Your First Day of Dance Class https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/tips-for-your-first-day-of-dance-class/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 17:12:47 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=5803 Your first dance class can evoke a mix of excitement and nervousness, and it’s important to acknowledge that you’re not alone in feeling this way. The unfamiliarity of the dance studio, the prospect of learning new steps, and the presence of more experienced dancers might be overwhelming. However, remember that everyone in the class, including your instructor, has been a beginner at some point. Here are some tips to help you overcome these fears on your first day.

  1. Dress Comfortably and Appropriately
    • One of the most crucial aspects of your first dance class is wearing the right attire. Choose clothing that allows for ease of movement, such as leggings or dance shorts paired with a comfortable top. If you’re unsure about the dress code, check with the dance studio in advance. Additionally, invest in a pair of proper dance shoes that are suitable for the style you’re learning.
  2. Arrive Early to Warm Up
    • Arriving a little early provides the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the dance studio, meet your instructor, and start warming up. Warm-up exercises are essential to prevent injuries and ensure your body is ready for the physical demands of dance. Stretch gently to increase flexibility and get your muscles ready for the movements you’ll be practicing.
  3. Embrace the Learning Process
    • As a beginner, it’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed. Dance is an art form that requires time and patience to master. Be open to the learning process and understand that improvement comes with practice. Don’t be too hard on yourself—celebrate small victories and view each class as an opportunity to grow and refine your skills.
  4. Listen and Observe
    • Pay close attention to your instructor’s guidance. Listen to verbal instructions, watch demonstrations carefully, and observe the more experienced dancers in the class. Absorb the details of the movements, posture, and expressions. Learning from others can provide valuable insights and help you grasp the nuances of the dance style you’re exploring.
  5. Ask Questions and Seek Feedback
    • Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re uncertain about a particular step or movement. Instructors are there to help you, and seeking clarification shows your commitment to learning. Additionally, be open to receiving feedback. Constructive criticism is an integral part of improvement, and your instructor’s insights can guide you on refining your technique.
  6. Stay Hydrated and Energized
    • Dancing can be physically demanding, so it’s crucial to stay hydrated and energized. Bring a water bottle to class and take short breaks when needed. Consider having a light snack before class to ensure you have enough energy to sustain you throughout the session.
  7. Be Respectful and Supportive
    • Respect your fellow dancers and the instructor. Create a positive and supportive atmosphere by encouraging your classmates. Remember that everyone is at a different stage in their dance journey, and fostering a sense of community enhances the overall experience for everyone.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Your first day of dance class is an exciting step toward discovering the joy of movement and expression. By following these tips, you’ll not only make the most of your initial experience but also lay the foundation for a fulfilling and enjoyable dance journey. Embrace the challenges, celebrate your progress, and most importantly, have fun on the dance floor!

How To Be A Rockin’ Dance Mom or Dad https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/how-to-be-a-rockin-dance-mom-or-dad/ Tue, 10 May 2022 15:11:32 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=3964 5 Helpful Tips

Parents want to be involved with their child’s extracurricular activities and help them succeed. It can be hard for many parents (especially those who did not do dance themselves) to navigate the dance world. Moms and dads may have questions about supporting their child and how to help them find success on their dance journey. At Nan’s School of Dance, we have compiled some helpful tips for our dance moms and dads that will be sure to help you “rock” the dance mom (or dad) role!

Empower Your Child

Dancers will have good days…and…they will have bad days. Some movements will come easier than others, and when your child has a setback, it is essential to empower them. Encourage them to speak with their teacher after class to take ownership of their dance experience and learn how to communicate. Strive to teach them to:

  • Speak up for themselves
  • Ask questions
  • Advocate for themselves

Help Set Goals

Learning dance is a journey – there will be obstacles along the way. That is why goal-setting is a great way for kids to overcome obstacles. If there is a move or routine that they are struggling with, encourage them to set a goal. Learning how to set a goal and effectively work toward completing it is an undeniably valuable skill. So whenever you have a moment, collaborate with your child and:

  • Set goals and benchmarks
  • Brainstorm ways to achieve those goals
  • Find ways to hold them accountable

Involvement: Find the Right Balance

Parents should be actively involved with their child’s dance while at the same time giving them the space they need. Parents need to let their children take responsibility and ownership of their training. At Nan’s dance we want our dancers to have fun and try to make the process enjoyable. Our instructors want you and your child to embrace the dance journey. So, try to listen to your child and provide support when needed.

  • Do NOT micromanage
  • Do NOT step in to fix everything
  • Do listen and support your child

Emotional Support

The beautiful thing about dance is that it’s an art, which means it is full of emotion. Dance routines will evoke emotions from the audience and the dancers. Dancers will experience a wide range of emotions while on their dance journey. They will be overcome with joy when they have achieved their goals. On the other hand, they may be sad or frustrated if they have difficulty learning a particular move. Whatever the emotion, it is crucial to SUPPORT your child.

  • Listen
  • Ask how you can help
  • Praise your child

Enjoy the Journey!

Throughout your child’s dance career, your child will learn and grow in ways that you haven’t yet imagined! Remember that you are along for this beautiful ride, and like most things in their childhood, it can go by a lot faster than we want! So enjoy this journey, mom and dad, because it is a beautiful one!

Good Dance Etiquette https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/good-dance-etiquette/ Tue, 21 Dec 2021 16:11:58 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=3800 Simple Rules For Dance Class Etiquette

At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe that we are a team. We believe that our students not only learn from their dance instructors but also from each other. That’s why good dance class etiquette is crucial to students’ success at dance. If students are interrupting class or not paying attention, it affects their dance lesson and the entire class. Here are some simple rules for good dance class etiquette.

Arrive Early

Give yourself enough time by arriving early to class. This extra time will allow you to:

  • get a drink of water and use the restroom
  • stretch and get your body ready for class
  • mentally prepared for the day’s lesson and routine
  • have some time to decompress with friends before the class

Arriving early will also save you from rushing into class and being disruptive.

Remain Attentive

It is important to pay attention to the lesson and remain attentive if the teacher is correcting another student. Heed those corrections and make sure you’re not guilty of the same mistakes. Talking during this one-on-one time, even whispering quietly with your neighbor, isn’t good dance etiquette.

Listen To The Teacher’s Instructions

Listening to the instructions is critical! If you are listening carefully, this will help make the class run smoothly and the instructor will be able to get through the day’s lesson.

Know When It’s A Good Time To Ask Questions

It’s appropriate to ask for clarification if you don’t understand a dance technique, but by watching closely and trying the move yourself, you may figure it out without the need to ask questions. If you are still having difficulty with the movement and are trying to correct it yourself, then you can ask the instructor for assistance.

Our instructors at Nan’s Dance are always there to help and our job is to make sure that students feel comfortable asking questions, but “dance etiquette” is understanding the right time to ask a question. Being respectful of the instructor and others in the class is key to a successful dance lesson.

Do Not Disrupt The Class if Arriving Late or Leaving Early

We get it, sometimes we run late or have to leave early for things that are out of our control, but that is not a reason to disrupt the entire class. If you plan on leaving early, speak with the teacher before class, and when it is time to leave early, slip out quietly. If you are coming into the class late, come in quickly and quietly and try to catch up and follow along.

Show A Positive Attitude

Everyone gets tired or has a bad day, but it is important to try and keep a positive attitude during your dance class. It would not be fair to the other students if your bad mood affected the class. Also putting on a positive attitude during class may just help cheer you up or wake you up!
