But with so many dance styles to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? Whether you or your child are exploring dance for the first time, selecting the best style can often be the hardest part in getting started. Our team put together this guide to explore the four main styles we offer, ballet, hip-hop, tap, and jazz, so you can decide which might be the best fit.

1. Ballet: The Foundation of Dance

Ballet emphasizes grace, discipline, and technique, making it a great starting point for young dancers. Our ballet classes for preteens and teens focus on building strength, flexibility, and proper form. Ballet helps students improve posture and poise, but it also requires a strong sense of discipline.

If your child is detail-oriented, loves structure, and enjoys moving to classical music, ballet might be the perfect fit. While some students may choose to specialize in ballet, others use it as a foundation before branching out into other styles like jazz or contemporary.

What dancers gain from ballet:

  • Enhanced flexibility and muscle tone
  • Greater body awareness and coordination
  • A sense of discipline and dedication
  • The ability to move with grace and fluidity

Ballet can be demanding, but for those who thrive on the beauty of the challenge, it is incredibly rewarding.

2. Hip-Hop: High-Energy, Fun and Freestyle

Our hip-hop classes are full of energy, fun, and creativity. Unlike ballet’s more formal structure, hip-hop allows for greater freedom of expression. Dancers use dynamic movements, often incorporating their own flair and style.

Hip-hop is a good choice for kids who are outgoing, love a beat, and enjoy being in the spotlight. The moves are fun to learn, and the performances are high-energy, making hip-hop a popular choice for those who want to try something modern and cool.

What dancers gain from hip-hop:

  • Confidence in freestyle movement
  • Improved rhythm and musicality
  • The ability to memorize and execute dynamic choreography
  • A creative outlet for self-expression

3. Tap Dance: Rhythmic and Fun

Tap is all about rhythm and sound. This style is perfect for kids who love music, especially those who enjoy playing with rhythm. Nan’s School of Dance offers tap classes where students learn to perfect their timing and technique while having a blast.

Tap dance is a great choice for students who enjoy the musicality of dance and want to challenge themselves in a unique way. The sounds created with each step provide instant feedback, which can be satisfying and motivating for young dancers.

What dancers gain from tap:

  • Improved rhythm and timing
  • Enhanced coordination between feet and body
  • A fun and energetic approach to dance
  • A deeper connection to music through movement

4. Jazz: Versatile and Expressive

Jazz dance is a dynamic and versatile style that draws inspiration from ballet while incorporating more modern and upbeat movements. It’s full of high-energy kicks, leaps, and turns, and it is typically set to popular music. At Nan’s School of Dance, our jazz classes encourage students to express their individuality while also focusing on technique and precision.

Jazz is a great option for kids who love both structure and freedom in dance. It strikes a balance between the discipline of ballet and the energy of hip-hop, making it ideal for those who want to experiment with different styles in one class.

What dancers  gain from jazz:

  • Stronger flexibility and endurance
  • Increased self-expression and creativity
  • The ability to perform high-energy routines
  • A deeper understanding of various dance techniques

How to Choose the Right Style

When choosing a dance style, it’s important to consider personality, interests, and what you hope to get out of dance. Here are some questions to help guide your decision:

  • Does your child prefer structured activities or more creative, freestyle options?
  • What type of music does your child enjoy?
  • Are you looking for a challenge in technique, or are you more focused on fun and expression?

Depending on your answers, the choice might be clear. Read over our different classes again and always reach out to us if you have any questions!

Dance is For Everyone

Choosing the right dance style for your child can open up a world of possibilities, from personal expression to physical fitness and artistic growth. How Dance Can Improve Athletic Performance for Boys https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/how-dance-can-improve-athletic-performance-for-boys/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 17:12:56 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6244 How Dance Can Improve Athletic Performance for Boys

When we think of boys and sports, the usual activities like soccer, basketball, or football often come to mind. However, dance is a highly beneficial and often overlooked option that can also dramatically improve athletic performance in other athletic activities. At Nan’s School of Dance, we know firsthand how dance helps boys develop key skills like balance, coordination, agility, and strength. These skills can easily translate into success in any sport or grow their admiration for dance. In this blog, we’ll explore how dance classes, like ours, are the perfect cross-training activity to help boys boost their athletic performance and become better all-around athletes.

1. Improved Coordination and Balance

One of the core elements of dance is coordination. Dance requires the body to move in a synchronized way. This constant engagement of muscles and awareness of body position helps dancers become more in control of their movements.

For boys involved in sports like soccer, basketball, or football, this level of coordination is essential. A well-coordinated athlete can pivot more quickly, react faster to changes in the game, and avoid injuries that can occur when the body isn’t fully aligned. Balance is another area where dance shines. Ballet, in particular, focuses on building balance and control through a variety of movements. This skill can be directly applied to activities that require staying centered and stable, such as defending an opponent in soccer or going for a jump shot in basketball.

Dance teaches boys to be aware of their bodies, helping them develop a sense of how to distribute weight and stay balanced. These skills are transferable to almost every sport, helping athletes gain an edge on the competition from a young age.

2. Increased Flexibility and Injury Prevention

Flexibility is key to both dance and sports performance. Tight muscles are a common cause of sports injuries, especially in sports that involve sudden, explosive movements like sprinting, jumping, or turning.

By improving flexibility, boys who take dance classes can reduce their risk of injury. Strong, flexible muscles are more resistant to strains and sprains. For example, football players often experience hamstring or groin pulls, injuries that are far less likely to occur if the athlete regularly stretches and improves flexibility through dance.

3. Strength, Power, and Endurance

Many people don’t realize how much strength is required in dance. Dancers spend hours training their legs, core, and upper body to perform powerful leaps, turns, and floor work. These strength building exercises provide boys with the muscle development they need to succeed in other sports.

In addition to boosting muscle strength, dance also promotes muscular endurance, meaning your child will be able to maintain peak performance for longer periods. This is especially useful in sports like soccer or basketball, where games can stretch over long durations, and stamina is critical to staying competitive.

4. Boosting Confidence and Mental Toughness

Dance is not only a physical activity; it’s also a great way to build mental toughness and confidence. Performing dance routines requires focus, perseverance, and the ability to perform under pressure, skills that are directly transferable to any sport.

For boys, being involved in dance can be a confidence booster. Learning new skills, mastering difficult moves, and performing in front of an audience can help them develop the mental resilience they’ll need in competitive sports. Confidence in movement, body control, and a positive mindset can all help athletes take risks, push their limits, and handle the challenges that come with playing sports.

Dance Classes for Everyone

At Nan’s School of Dance, we know that dance isn’t just for aspiring dancers—it’s an incredible cross-training tool for boys who want to excel in sports. By improving coordination, flexibility, strength, agility, and mental toughness, boys who take dance classes can gain a competitive edge on the field or court. Whether your child is looking to enhance their athletic performance or simply wants to try something new, dance can provide the physical and mental tools they need to succeed.

Dance Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts in the Studio https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/dance-etiquette-dos-and-donts-in-the-studio/ Tue, 02 Jul 2024 16:12:48 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6160 Dance Etiquette from Nan’s School of Dance

Dance is an art form that requires discipline, respect, and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned dancer, understanding and practicing good dance etiquette is essential for maintaining a positive and productive environment in the studio. At Nan’s School of Dance, we emphasize the importance of proper behavior to ensure that everyone can learn and grow in a supportive setting. Here are some key do’s and don’ts to keep in mind during your dance classes.

      What To Do:

      Arrive on Time

Punctuality is a sign of respect for both your instructor and your classmates. Arriving on time allows you to participate in the full warm-up, which is crucial for preventing injuries and preparing your body for the class. If you happen to be late, enter quietly and join the class without disrupting the ongoing session.

      Dress Appropriately

Wearing the right attire is not just about looking the part; it’s about safety and functionality. Ensure that you wear the appropriate dancewear for your class type, whether it’s ballet, jazz, hip-hop, or any other style. Comfort is optimal for practice, but dressing the part shows professionalism and that you’re preparing for competitions. We would recommend that you tie back your hair, and don’t wear long jewelry (such as long necklaces and loose bracelets) to avoid getting in your way during practice.

      Respect Personal Space

Dance requires movement and often, close proximity to others. Be mindful of personal space and avoid bumping into or crowding your fellow dancers. If you’re practicing a formation, adjust your movements accordingly to ensure everyone has enough room to dance comfortably.

      Clean Up After Yourself

After class, make sure to pick up any personal belongings, trash, or equipment you’ve used. This simple act of cleaning up helps maintain a tidy and organized studio, making it a pleasant space for everyone.

      Encourage and Support Your Peers

A positive attitude goes a long way in creating a supportive community. Encourage and support your fellow dancers by offering constructive feedback, celebrating their achievements, and being a source of motivation. Remember, everyone is on their own journey and a little kindness can make a big difference.

      Show Gratitude

Expressing gratitude towards your instructor and peers fosters a positive and respectful environment. A simple thank you at the end of class can go a long way in showing appreciation for their efforts and support.

      What Not To Do:

      Interrupting the Instructor

Listening to your instructor is the key for your learning and progression. Avoid talking when the instructor is giving instructions or demonstrating movements. If you have a question, wait for an appropriate moment, such as during a break or when the instructor invites questions. This helps maintain a focused and respectful atmosphere in the studio.

      Using Your Phone During Class

Your phone can be a major distraction, not only to you but also to those around you. Keep your phone on silent or, better yet, leave it in your bag during class. Engaging fully with the session helps you get the most out of your time in the studio and shows respect for the learning environment.

Bringing Food or Drinks (Except Water) into the Studio

Food and sugary drinks can create a mess and attract pests, which is why they should be left outside the studio. Water, however, is essential for staying hydrated, so bring a bottle and take sips during breaks to keep your energy levels up.

      Dirty Shoes

Your dance shoes are for the studio floor and wearing them outside can damage them and bring dirt into the studio. Have a designated pair of shoes for dancing and change into them once you arrive. This helps keep the studio floor clean and in good condition. If you like to use one pair of shoes, that’s fine too, as long as you’re mindful of what’s on the bottom of your feet before walking into the studio.

      Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, but this can be detrimental to your own progress and self-esteem. Focus on your personal growth and set your own goals. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, and understand that each dancer has a unique path.

      Remember to Have Fun

Good dance etiquette is fundamental in creating a respectful, productive, and enjoyable atmosphere in the studio. By following these do’s and don’ts, you contribute to a positive learning environment where everyone can thrive. At Nans Dance, we are committed to fostering a community where dancers can grow, learn, and express themselves through the beautiful art of dance. So, next time you step into the studio, remember these guidelines and dance with respect and joy.

How to Help Your Dancer Stay Active While on Vacation https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/how-to-help-your-dancer-stay-active-while-on-vacation/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 16:12:59 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6154 Vacations are a time for relaxation and fun, but that  doesn’t mean your dance has to take a break from dance. Young dancers can stay active and maintain their skills while enjoying their vacation. Don’t know where to start or how to help your child? We’ve got you covered!

      1. Plan Ahead

Before heading out, research the area you’ll be visiting. Look for local dance studios or community centers offering drop-in classes. This can be a fun way for your child to experience new dance styles and meet other young dancers.

      2. Utilize Online Resources

In today’s digital age, staying connected to dance has never been easier. Make use of online dance classes and tutorials available on platforms like YouTube or specialized dance websites. Our blog at Nan’s School of Dance may also offer online resources or recommended routines for maintaining technique and practicing dance this summer.

      3. Create a Travel-Friendly Dance Routine

Encourage your child to develop a short, travel-friendly dance routine they can practice daily. This routine could include warm-ups, stretches, and a few favorite dance moves. Keeping it simple ensures it’s easy to do even in a small space, like a hotel room or vacation rental.

      4. Stay Active with Fun Activities

Incorporate activities that naturally involve movement. Swimming, hiking, and playing at the beach are excellent ways to keep your child active and engaged. These activities help maintain their stamina and flexibility, which are crucial for dancing.

      5. Pack Portable Dance Equipment

Bring along lightweight, portable dance equipment such as a yoga mat for stretching or resistance bands for strength exercises. This can make it easier for your child to keep up with their conditioning routine.

      6. Encourage Daily Stretching

Make stretching a daily habit. Not only does this help maintain flexibility, but it also keeps your child’s muscles ready for when they return to their regular dance classes. Set aside a specific time each day, perhaps in the morning or before bed, for a quick stretching session.

      7. Practice Mindfulness and Rest

Vacation is also about rest and recovery. Encourage your child to practice mindfulness activities like yoga or meditation. These practices can help with mental focus and relaxation, which are beneficial for dancers.

      Keep the Rhythm Alive

Vacations are the perfect time for your child to unwind and explore new places, but they don’t have to leave their love for dance behind. By planning ahead, utilizing online resources, and incorporating fun activities, you can ensure that dance remains a part of their vacation. Whether it’s a daily stretch, a short dance routine, or even a family dance-off, these simple yet effective strategies will help your child maintain their skills and stay active. Keep the rhythm alive, and your child will return to their regular dance classes refreshed, inspired, and ready to shine.

Reach Your Goals with Nan’s Dance!

At Nan’s School of Dance, our goal is to provide top-quality instruction at a competitive price. From Rehearsal to Performance: The Complete Dancer’s Checklist https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/from-rehearsal-to-performance-the-complete-dancers-checklist/ Sun, 21 Apr 2024 16:12:42 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6139 Dancing is not just an art; it’s a journey from the first step in the rehearsal studio to the final bow on the stage. It requires dedication, passion, and a meticulous approach to preparation. Whether you’re a budding ballet dancer or a seasoned hip-hop enthusiast, competing can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. But fear not! With the right guidance and a comprehensive checklist, you can navigate the dance competition season with grace and confidence.

      Preparation Begins at the Studio

The foundation of a successful performance is laid in the countless hours spent in the dance studio. It’s where skills are honed, routines are memorized, and teamwork is built. The key is consistent practice, not just going through the motions but actively working on improving technique, strength, and expression.

Understand Your Dance: Knowing every step, beat, and emotion of your dance is crucial. Immerse yourself in the music and the story you’re telling through your movements.

Feedback is Golden: Regular feedback from your instructors can guide your practice sessions. Work on the areas they highlight and incorporate their advice into your routine.

      Physical and Mental Well-being

A dancer’s body is their instrument, and like any fine-tuned instrument, it requires care and maintenance to perform optimally.

Nutrition and Hydration: Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated are essential, especially as competition day approaches. Fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to endure long rehearsals and recover faster.

Mental Preparation: The mental aspect of preparing for a competition is just as important as the physical. Visualization techniques, meditation, and positive affirmations can help ease anxiety and boost confidence.

      The Week Before: Final Preparations

The week before the competition is a critical time for final preparations. It’s not just about rehearsing the routine; it’s about ensuring that every detail is polished to perfection.

Costume and Makeup: Ensure your costume fits perfectly and all accessories are accounted for. Practice your makeup and hair routine to ensure there are no surprises on the day of the performance.

Rehearsal with Props and Costumes: If your routine involves props or specific costumes, practice with them to ensure you’re comfortable and everything flows smoothly.

      Competition Day: The Checklist

The day has finally arrived. Nerves are high, but so is the excitement. Having a checklist can help ensure that nothing is forgotten amidst the buzz of competition day.

Essentials Bag: Pack a bag with all your essentials—costume, makeup, hair accessories, spare tights, and any props you need for your routine. Don’t forget snacks and water to keep you energized and hydrated.

Warm-Up and Stretch: Give yourself ample time to warm up and stretch before your performance. This not only prepares your body but also helps calm your nerves.

      Post-Performance Reflection

After the adrenaline of the performance wears off, take time to reflect on the experience. What went well? What could be improved? Use this as a learning opportunity to grow as a dancer.

Celebrate Your Achievement: Regardless of the outcome, celebrate the hard work and dedication you’ve put into reaching this point. Every performance is a step forward in your dance journey.

Feedback and Growth: Seek feedback from your instructors and peers. Constructive criticism is invaluable for your growth as a dancer.

      Ongoing Growth: Beyond the Performance

Transitioning from rehearsal to performance is a journey of growth for every dancer. By following this checklist, you can navigate the process with confidence and grace. Remember, the goal is not only to perform flawlessly but to connect with the art of dance, conveying emotion and telling a story that resonates with your audience. Dance is a celebration of movement, a form of expression that transcends words, and a discipline that demands both physical and mental strength. Whether you’re stepping onto the stage for the first time or the hundredth, the magic of performance is a testament to your dedication and love for dance.

Effective Practice Routines for Dance Competitions https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/effective-practice-routines-for-dance-competitions/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 16:12:33 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6136 Competition season is an exhilarating time for dancers. It’s a chance to showcase skills, express creativity, and celebrate months of hard work. However, the journey to the stage is paved with dedication, precision, and effective practice routines. At Nan’s School of Dance, a strong emphasis is placed on nurturing students’ growth and ensuring their success in dance competitions. This commitment to excellence is evident in their approach to practice routines, which are designed to enhance performance and instill confidence.

      The Importance of Practice

Practice is the cornerstone of any dancer’s journey, especially when preparing for competitions. It’s about more than just repeating steps; it’s about refining technique, building stamina, and perfecting performance quality. At Nan’s School of Dance, practice routines are crafted to challenge and inspire students, encouraging them to push beyond their limits and achieve their personal best.

      Understanding the Choreography

The first step in an effective practice routine is a deep understanding of the choreography. This means breaking down each movement, understanding its purpose, and recognizing how it contributes to the overall story or theme of the piece. Nan’s instructors emphasize the importance of intention behind each movement, encouraging dancers to connect emotionally with the choreography.

      Technical Precision

Technical skills are the foundation of a dancer’s performance. Practice routines at Nan’s include targeted exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and control. These exercises are tailored to the demands of the competition choreography, ensuring that dancers have the physical capabilities to execute their routines flawlessly.

      Stamina and Endurance

Competitions often require dancers to perform multiple routines back-to-back, highlighting the need for excellent stamina and endurance. Nan’s practice routines include cardiovascular training and rehearsal blocks that mimic the competition schedule, preparing dancers for the physical demands of the event.

      Performance Quality

Captivating an audience and judges is about more than just technical prowess; it’s about performance quality. Nan’s School of Dance places a strong emphasis on expression, musicality, and dynamics. Dancers are encouraged to practice with full performance energy, focusing on facial expressions, body language, and the ability to connect with the audience.

      Feedback and Reflection

Growth as a dancer involves not only practice but also the ability to reflect on feedback. Nan’s instructors provide constructive criticism to help students identify areas for improvement. Dancers are encouraged to videotape their rehearsals, allowing them to self-evaluate and adjust their performances accordingly.

      Rest and Recovery

An often overlooked aspect of effective practice routines is the importance of rest and recovery. Nan’s School of Dance ensures that students understand the value of balancing intense practice with adequate rest, highlighting the role of rest in injury prevention and mental well-being.

The Path Forward in Dance Competitions

The journey to dance competition success is multifaceted, requiring dedication, technical skill, and emotional expressiveness. At Nan’s School of Dance, effective practice routines are the foundation upon which dancers build their competitive performances. Through a combination of technical drills, performance practice, feedback, and rest, Nan’s dancers are equipped to take the stage with confidence and grace. As they step into the spotlight, they know that every rehearsal, every piece of feedback, and every moment of rest has prepared them to shine. With Nan’s School of Dance, dancers not only compete; they captivate and inspire, showcasing the beauty and power of dance.

7 Tips to Quickly Improve Your Dancing https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/7-tips-to-quickly-improve-your-dancing/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 17:12:57 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=5966 Picking up a new hobby or trying to improve the skills you already have can be frustrating. However, improving your dancing doesn’t have to be hard if you dedicate yourself to practicing and learning. If you’re looking to level up your skills follow these seven key tips that can help dancers of all ages and levels enhance their skills, find new inspiration, and add more grace and precision to their movements

      1. Practice Regularly

Consistency is key in dancing. Regular practice helps to improve muscle memory, rhythm, and technique. Dedicate specific times each week to practice and stick to them. Remember, even 20 minutes of focused practice can be more beneficial than hours of unfocused work.

      2. Watch and Learn

Observing other dancers can be incredibly educational. Watch performances or videos of skilled dancers, paying attention to their technique, expressions, and how they interpret music. Try to emulate aspects of their style that resonate with you.

      3. Take Professional Classes

Enrolling in classes at a dance studio provides structured learning and professional guidance. Experienced instructors can offer personalized feedback and tips that are crucial for improvement. Plus, you’ll be part of a community that shares your passion.

      4. Focus on Basics and Foundation

Mastering the basics is crucial. Spend time perfecting your foundational moves as they are the building blocks for more complex techniques. Solid basics ensure that your dance looks polished and professional.

      5. Record and Analyze Your Performance

Recording yourself can be eye-opening. Watch your recordings to identify areas of strength and improvement. Pay attention to details like posture, facial expressions, and timing. This self-analysis can guide your practice sessions effectively.

      6. Stay Physically Fit

Dance is physically demanding. Maintain a regular fitness routine to enhance your strength, flexibility, and stamina. Incorporate exercises like yoga, Pilates, or strength training into your routine to support your dance practice.

      7. Embrace Feedback and Be Patient

Constructive criticism is a gift. Embrace feedback from instructors and peers, using it to refine your skills. Remember, improvement takes time and patience. Celebrate small victories and don’t be too hard on yourself.

      Practice Makes Perfect

Improving your dancing skills is a journey of passion, dedication, and hard work. By following these tips and embracing the learning process, you’ll see noticeable improvements in your abilities. Keep dancing, keep learning, and most importantly, have fun on your dance journey!

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Dance Lessons https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-dance-lessons/ Tue, 07 Jun 2022 15:11:49 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=4005 5 Tips To Help Any Dancer

So you want to be a dancer? You’ve signed up for classes and that’s a great start. But how can you get the most out of your dance classes and excel along your dancing journey? At Nan’s School of Dance, we have witnessed our dancers have great success when it comes to dance. But their success doesn’t just happen over night. Here are some excellent tips on how to get the most out of your dance lessons.

      Be Early

This may seem silly, but arriving to dance lessons early can really help. Being early, gives you time to put away your things, say hello to friends, and warm up. By the time dance class actually starts you will be ready to go and prepared to fully absorb the teacher’s demonstrations and instructions.

      Plan Ahead

You may see this and think, “What do I possibly need to plan ahead for? I know when dance class is and how to get there.” Well, schedules can be hectic! Balancing school, dance, and family obligations can be challenging. It can be helpful to have a planner to better schedule your time around dance lessons. You can also plan to bring a snack to have before and after class. If you have a big test that week, make plans to study each night so you won’t be stressed. Giving yourself enough time to enjoy your dance lessons with a clear head will help you learn!

      Find a Buddy

Dance class is a perfect place to make friends. Find a buddy in class that you can talk to. If you want to work on a routine or a step, it might be fun to reach out to them outside of class and practice together. That extra practice could really pay off! In addition, having a buddy is great because you can motivate each other if you are having difficulties.

      Communicate With Your Instructor

Your teacher is always here to help. Our instructors are always willing to help and answer any questions you may have. Never hesitate to speak up and ask if you need help or clarification on a step, that is exactly what we are here for!

      Self-Assess

Don’t just look to your instructor for critique or praise. Do not underestimate your “eye.”

      • Use the mirror to watch yourself
      • Practice at home and record the routine
      • Get feedback from your friends or family.

Don’t be scared to pat yourself on the back when you catch yourself doing an awesome job!
