Keep Dancing This Fall! https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/having-summer-fun-at-nans-keep-dancing-this-fall/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6670 The summer sun may still be shining bright, but we’re already getting excited for what comes next, the fall dance season at Nan’s! Whether you joined us for our summer camps, tried a new dance style for the first time, or simply discovered how much fun it is to move to the beat with new friends, we hope you had a blast.

If you loved the energy, creativity, and confidence-building fun of dancing at Nan’s this summer, we’ve got great news: the fun doesn’t stop when summer ends. In fact, fall is one of the most exciting times to become a dancer.

A New Season Means New Opportunities

When school starts back, it’s the perfect time to settle into a fresh routine, and for many of our students, dance is a favorite part of their weekly schedule. Fall classes at Nan’s offer structure, growth, and excitement as we build on the fun we had over the summer and get ready for a new season of progress.

During the school year, students have the chance to:

  • Join weekly classes that help develop technique and confidence
  • Reconnect with friends they met over the summer (or meet new ones)
  • Prepare for performances that showcase their hard work
  • Set goals and see real improvement as the weeks go on

There’s something special about seeing familiar faces, stretching your skills, and showing up each week for a class that makes you feel strong and supported.

Dancing Through the School Year

As fall begins and school picks up, it’s easy to fill your calendar with homework, sports, and other commitments. But dance isn’t just another activity, it’s a place to unwind, express yourself, and stay active in a fun and encouraging environment.

At Nan’s, we work hard to make dance a positive, uplifting part of your child’s routine. Our classes give students something to look forward to each week, whether they’re leaping across the floor in ballet or mastering sharp footwork on tap. Plus, dance supports focus, discipline, and self-confidence, which can help in the classroom too.

And let’s not forget the joy of moving to music, the challenge of learning choreography, and the friendships that grow stronger over time. Those moments matter, especially as kids grow and navigate new school years.

From Campers to Committed Dancers

We often hear from families who say their child “just wanted to try dance camp” and end up asking, When can I come back?”

If that sounds familiar, now’s the time to continue the journey. Fall classes give campers the chance to:

  • Build on the skills they started learning during summer
  • Explore new styles or stick with the one they love
  • Gain a deeper understanding of technique and movement
  • Begin a path toward long-term confidence and stage experience

Some of our most passionate dancers got their start in summer camps, and their growth during the school year has been incredible to watch.

For Parents: A Safe and Supportive Space

We know that for parents, the decision to continue classes during the school year comes down to more than just fun, it’s about finding an environment that’s safe, supportive, and structured.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we create a space where students can:

  • Learn from experienced, caring instructors
  • Build lasting friendships and social confidence
  • Express themselves creatively in a positive setting
  • Be part of a larger community that values respect and growth

And because our schedule includes options for multiple age groups and experience levels, there’s something for every dancer, from those just beginning to those ready to take the stage.

Looking Ahead to Performances and Progress

While summer is full of creative play and skill-building, fall is when the magic of steady progress begins to take shape. As the season moves forward, our dancers start preparing for performances, recitals, and opportunities to shine in front of an audience.

There’s nothing quite like seeing your child walk onto the stage with pride in their heart and a smile on their face, knowing how far they’ve come since their first class.

Fall classes help lay the foundation for those milestone moments and we’d love to help your dancer get there.

Don’t Let the Rhythm Stop Now

If your child found joy, confidence, or a new sense of purpose through dance this summer, don’t let that momentum fade away with the season. Dancing into fall is the best way to keep those skills sharp, those friendships growing, and that creative spark alive.

At Nan’s School of Dance, every season is a new chapter filled with movement, learning, and joy. Whether your child is continuing from summer camp or stepping into the studio for the first time this fall, we’re ready to welcome them with open arms.

Tips For Your First Day of Dance Class: What Every New Dancer Should Know! https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/tips-for-your-first-day-of-dance-class-what-every-new-dancer-should-know/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 06:26:45 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6665 If you’re reading this, it probably means you’re about to start your very first dance class at Nan’s School of Dance, how exciting! Whether you’re about to twirl into ballet, tap your way through rhythm, or leap across the room in jazz class, your dance journey is just beginning. Starting something new can feel a little scary, but don’t worry we’re here to help you feel confident, prepared, and most importantly, excited for your first day.

Let’s break down what to expect and how to get ready so you can walk into your first dance class like a star.

What to Wear (and What Not to Worry About)

Your outfit isn’t just about looking cute, it’s about being comfortable and ready to move! Check with Nan’s School of Dance to find out what’s recommended for your specific style of dance. But here are some general tips:

  • Ballet: A leotard, tights, and ballet shoes. Hair should be up and away from your face (a bun is best!).
  • Jazz or Tap: Leotard or form-fitting top, leggings or dance shorts, and proper dance shoes.
  • Hip-Hop: A t-shirt or tank top, joggers or leggings, and clean sneakers used just for dance.

Pack Your Dance Bag Like a Pro

Your dance bag is your trusty sidekick. Here’s what to toss inside before heading to the studio:

  • Your dance shoes (ballet, tap, jazz, whatever you need!)
  • A water bottle
  • Hair ties and a brush
  • A small healthy snack (especially if you’re dancing after school)
  • Deodorant or body wipes for older dancers
  • A smile and positive attitude (yes, this counts!)

Try not to overpack, you want to be ready, not weighed down.

Arrive On-Time or Early

It’s totally normal to feel butterflies and first day jitters, but just remember, everyone there was new once. The instructors at Nan’s are super friendly and love seeing new faces walk through the door!

We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before your class starts. This gives you time to:

  • Use the restroom
  • Change into your dance shoes
  • Warm up a bit if needed
  • Say hi to your instructor and classmates

Meet Your Instructor and Classmates

Your dance teacher is there to help you grow, have fun, and build confidence. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re unsure about a move or routine.

You might also meet other new dancers who feel just like you, shy, excited, or even a little nervous. Be kind and introduce yourself! Having a dance buddy can make everything more fun.

Focus on Fun, Not Perfection

Your first class is all about trying something new. Don’t worry if you don’t get every step right the first time, that’s totally normal! Every dancer starts as a beginner, and the best way to improve is to keep coming, keep practicing, and keep smiling.

Here’s what to remember:

  • Listen and watch closely
  • Try your best
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
  • Celebrate small wins (like nailing a turn or keeping good posture!)

Your dance teacher will guide you step by step. Trust the process, you’ve got this!

Parents: How You Can Help

Parents, we understand you’re just as excited and sometimes nervous as your children for their first day of dance class. To support your dancer, double-check the dress code and pack their dance bag the night before. Offer encouraging words and remind them it’s okay to be nervous. Getting them to class on time will help them feel relaxed. Let them know it’s okay not to be perfect as they are learning, and celebrate their bravery after class with a high five or a treat.

Reflect and Recharge

When class is over, take a moment to check in with how you feel. Tired? That’s normal. Happy? We hope so! Nervous about coming back? That’s okay too. Each week gets easier and more fun as you start to remember the steps, build strength, and make new friends.

Drink lots of water, stretch a little before bed, and get excited to return. You’re officially a dancer now!

Start Your Dance Journey

Starting dance is a big step (literally!). You’re joining a community of artists, athletes, and friends who will cheer you on every step of the way. At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe in helping each student shine at their own pace with joy, confidence, and lots of movement.

So take a deep breath, lace up those shoes, and step into class with your head held high. Your dance adventure is just beginning. We can’t wait to see where it takes you!

Can Dance Help With Social Skills? Here’s What the Research Says https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/can-dance-help-with-social-skills-heres-what-the-research-says/ Thu, 12 Jun 2025 14:06:05 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6627 While many think of dance as physical exercise or a performance art, research is increasingly showing that it also plays a significant role in developing social skills, especially in children. At Nan’s School of Dance we see these benefits firsthand every day!

Why Dance is a Social Playground

Dance classes provide a unique environment where individuals learn to interact, cooperate, and communicate in non-verbal ways. In a dance class, children must learn to follow instructions, work in groups, take turns, and synchronize their movements with others. These are fundamental social skills that are crucial not just in dance, but in all aspects of life.

Research supports this idea. Studies have shown that participation in dance can improve empathy, communication skills, and cooperation. This is because dance requires participants to be aware of others, to anticipate their movements, and to respond appropriately. It’s a constant exchange of energy and understanding. For children, this is especially valuable as they are still developing their social awareness and abilities.

Building Confidence and Self-Esteem

One of the biggest social benefits of dance is the boost in confidence and self-esteem it provides. When a child masters a new dance step or performs in a recital, they experience a sense of accomplishment that is incredibly empowering. This sense of achievement translates into greater confidence in other social settings as well.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we foster a supportive and encouraging environment where every student feels valued and celebrated. Our instructors are dedicated to helping each child reach their full potential, not just as dancers, but as individuals. We believe that building self-esteem is just as important as teaching technique, and we make it a priority in every class.

Learning Teamwork and Collaboration

Many dance forms involve group work, whether it’s partnering in ballet or forming a synchronized ensemble in jazz or hip hop. This teamwork element teaches children the importance of collaboration and mutual respect. They learn to rely on each other, support each other, and celebrate each other’s successes.

When students work together on a dance routine, they develop a strong sense of camaraderie. They learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts constructively, and compromise for the good of the group. These are essential social skills that will benefit them in school, in future careers, and in their personal relationships.

Gain Important Life Skills Through Dance!

At Nan’s, our instructors create an environment where students feel safe to try new things, make mistakes, and support one another. We believe that learning to dance is also about learning to connect. Parents frequently tell us they see changes at home like more confidence, better listening, and stronger friendships.

So if you’re looking for a fun, engaging way that may help your child build lifelong social skills, dance class can be more than a movement for them. Dance is a community builder.

Muscle Memory in Young Dancers: What Science Reveals https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/muscle-memory-in-young-dancers-what-science-reveals/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 13:57:50 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6621 More Than Just Movement

Have you ever wondered how dancers make those intricate movements look so effortless? Well, practice makes perfect and practice also makes muscle memory. This is a powerful neurological process that helps dancers of all ages internalize movements and recall them with precision. For young dancers especially, muscle memory is essential to building technique, developing coordination, and feeling confident in choreography and feeling amazing about their progress.

What Exactly is Muscle Memory?

At its heart, muscle memory is how our brains learn and remember physical movements through repetition. When children practice a dance step again and again, their brains create stronger connections between their nerve cells. Eventually, these movements become automatic, like second nature. This means our dancers can focus on the artistry, emotions, and smooth transitions of their routines, rather than just the steps themselves.

The Science Behind It

Young brains have a high degree of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s amazing ability to change and form new pathways. Research on the mind-muscle connection shows that when dancers actively focus on the muscles they are using, they enhance these pathways. This focused practice strengthens both gross and fine motor skills, helping children control their bodies with greater precision. This study found that dancers who consciously engaged their muscles during training showed improved retention and execution of movements.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we leverage this by offering age-appropriate instruction that combines repetition with fun, creative exploration. Our classes are designed to strengthen not only the body but the mind. We believe that foundation in movement can carry over into everyday life, improving posture, focus, and even academic performance.

How to Achieve Muscle Memory

Muscle memory depends on consistency. Attending class regularly and practicing at home accelerates the muscle memory process. In time, students begin to string together complex routines, improvise with ease, and perform with growing confidence. Ultimately, muscle memory is a dancer’s reward for practicing. It turns effort into instinct, training into artistry, and young dancers into graceful, confident performers ready to shine on stage!

Transitioning to Summer: Prioritize Nutrition, Hydration, and Stretching for Dancers https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/transitioning-to-summer-prioritize-nutrition-hydration-and-stretching-for-dancers/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6527 When you think of summer, you imagine carefree fun, vacations, and time to relax. But for dancers, summer is also a time to focus on self-care and preparation for the next dance season. While the warmer months offer a well-deserved break, neglecting proper nutrition, hydration, and stretching can negatively impact your performance and overall well-being. Whether you’re participating in a summer intensive, taking time off, or just enjoying casual practice, taking care of your body should be a priority.

Hydration Matters

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things a dancer can do in the summer. Warmer weather and increased activity levels lead to more sweating, making dehydration a real risk. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, and reduced endurance, all of which directly affect your ability to dance safely and efficiently.

To avoid dehydration, dancers should drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day, and even more if they are training or spending time outdoors. Start your day with a glass of water, bring a reusable water bottle everywhere, and consider hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges. Avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, as they can actually dehydrate the body. Staying properly hydrated ensures optimal energy levels, better muscle function, and faster recovery.

Fuel Your Dance Performance

Nutrition plays a huge role in a dancer’s energy, strength, and endurance. While summer is a time for barbecues, ice cream, and fast food, dancers must focus on balanced meals to maintain peak performance.

Eating a mix of lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates will keep your body energized and prepared for movement. Proteins like chicken, eggs, and beans help muscles recover, while whole grains, fruits, and vegetables provide long-lasting energy. Avoid processed foods and excessive sugar, as they can lead to energy crashes and sluggishness.

It’s also important to time meals correctly. Eating a healthy pre-class snack (such as a banana with nut butter or a yogurt smoothie) fuels your workout, while a post-class meal (like a turkey and avocado wrap or cottage cheese with berries) helps with recovery. A well-fed dancer is a strong dancer!

Keep Your Body Flexible and Strong

Dancing in the summer heat can put extra strain on the muscles, making proper stretching and mobility work essential. Without consistent stretching, dancers risk tightness, injuries, and loss of flexibility when they return to class.

Setting aside time for daily stretching routines helps maintain flexibility and strength, even during a break from structured classes. Some key stretches to include are:

  • Hip Openers: Butterfly stretch, lunges with a twist
  • Leg and Hamstring Stretches: Standing or seated forward fold, leg swings
  • Back and Core Strengthening: Bridge pose, gentle spinal twists

Stretching in the morning, after workouts, and before bed helps dancers maintain mobility and prevent stiffness. A few minutes a day can make a huge difference when it’s time to return to regular classes!

Dancing Safely in the Summer Heat

Dancers who train outside or attend summer workshops should be mindful of heat exhaustion and overexertion. The body works harder to cool itself in warm weather, so it’s crucial to take extra precautions to stay safe.

Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, taking frequent water breaks, and avoiding direct sun exposure for long periods can help prevent overheating. When exercising inside the studio, make sure to let your instructor know If you start feeling dizzy, overly fatigued, or nauseous. If you have any of those symptoms, stop dancing immediately and find a cool place to rest. Listening to your body is key to staying healthy during the hot summer months of training.

Give Your Body Time to Recharge

While staying active is important, rest and recovery are just as crucial for dancers during summer. Overworking your body can lead to burnout, fatigue, and injuries that carry over into the next dance season.

Getting 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night helps your muscles recover, while engaging in gentle activities like swimming, yoga, or walking keeps your body moving without adding stress. Taking at least one full rest day per week allows your body to rebuild strength and prevent overuse injuries. A well-rested dancer will be stronger and more prepared for future classes.

Balance is Key to a Healthy Summer

Summer is a time to relax, have fun, and enjoy the break from school, but it’s also a time to prioritize self-care. By focusing on proper hydration, nutrition, stretching, and recovery, dancers can transition into the next season feeling strong, flexible, and ready to perform their best.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we encourage our students to take care of their bodies so they can continue to grow as dancers. Whether you’re attending summer classes or preparing for the summer season, remember: your health and well-being are the key to success!

Take Pre-Ballet at Nan’s School of Dance! https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/take-pre-ballet-at-nans-school-of-dance/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6523 Ballet is a beautiful and rewarding art form that requires dedication, discipline, and grace. However, jumping straight into ballet can feel overwhelming for young dancers who are just beginning their journey. That’s why our Pre-Ballet class at Nan’s School of Dance was designed specifically for young children who are eager to explore dance! Pre-Ballet provides the perfect foundation before stepping into a full ballet class. If your child has expressed an interest in ballet but isn’t quite ready for a structured class, here’s why Pre-Ballet is the ideal starting point.

A Fun and Supportive Introduction to Ballet

Pre-Ballet is designed to introduce young children to the fundamentals of ballet in a supportive and encouraging environment. Rather than focusing on strict techniques right away, students will learn through imaginative exercises, playful activities, and creative movement. This approach helps them build a love for dance while gradually developing the discipline and structure needed for future ballet training.

At Nan’s School of Dance, we believe that creating a love for movement at an early age is essential. Our experienced instructors make sure every class is engaging, fun, and accessible for young dancers, keeping them excited to come back each week!

Developing Coordination, Strength, and Flexibility

One of the key benefits of Pre-Ballet is that it helps children develop coordination, strength, and flexibility in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. Through simple exercises like balancing on one foot, learning how to point their toes, and practicing basic arm and leg movements, young dancers begin to understand how their bodies move.

These foundational skills are crucial for ballet training and will help children as they progress to more structured classes. Additionally, working on flexibility and strength at a young age helps prevent injuries and improves overall physical development.

Enhancing Focus and Discipline

Ballet is known for its attention to detail, precision, and discipline. While Pre-Ballet is a fun and playful class, it also introduces children to the structure and focus required for ballet training.

Through listening to instructions, following a sequence of movements, and learning simple choreography, children begin to develop important life skills such as:

  • Patience and perseverance
  • The ability to follow directions
  • Improved concentration and focus

These skills are not only beneficial for dance but also translate into academics, sports, and other extracurricular activities.

Building Confidence and Social Skills

At Nan’s School of Dance, we create a warm and welcoming space where children feel encouraged to express themselves.

As young dancers practice and master new skills, they gain a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance. Performing small routines in class also helps build confidence in front of an audience, which can be valuable for school presentations and other activities later in life.

Additionally, Pre-Ballet introduces children to teamwork and cooperation. Learning to dance in sync with others, take turns, and respect personal space are all important social skills that will benefit them beyond the dance studio.

A Smooth Transition into Ballet

For children who dream of dancing ballet but need a little extra time to prepare, Pre-Ballet is the perfect stepping stone. By the time they transition into a full ballet class, they will already be familiar with key concepts such as posture, movement patterns, and classroom etiquette. This early preparation makes moving into formal ballet less intimidating and more enjoyable, giving them the confidence to continue their dance journey.

Cardio Dance: A Fun Way to Exercise https://www.nansdancenc.com/blog/cardio-dance-a-fun-way-to-exercise/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 00:45:02 +0000 https://www.nansdancenc.com/?p=6446 Everybody has danced in some capacity before. Whether it’s a little shimmy to your favorite song, or following a tiktok chore, you’ve probably noticed that dancing can be a lot of fun! But did you know that dancing isn’t just good for your mood? Cardio dance classes combine high-energy music with choreographed moves to create a full-body exercise regimen that’s as much fun as it is effective. Backed by scientific research, cardio dance offers a range of benefits for your heart, muscles, and mental health. You don’t have to be a dancer or have any special equipment for the dance floor to stay in shape!

What is Cardio Dance?

Cardio dance is a fitness style that fuses rhythmic dance moves with aerobic exercise. Unlike traditional dance classes that focus on technique and performance, cardio dance prioritizes sustained movement to elevate your heart rate, helping you burn calories and improve cardiovascular health. The steps are designed to be accessible, so you don’t need a dance background to get the benefits of the exercise. You can really dance like no one is watching, technique and style doesn’t matter!

The Science Behind Cardiovascular Exercise

When you engage in any sustained, moderate-to-vigorous activity, your heart rate increases, and your muscles require more oxygen. This prompts your cardiovascular system to work harder, pumping blood more efficiently, which strengthens your heart over time. According to the American Heart Association, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week. Cardio dance easily meets these guidelines.

A growing body of research supports the cardiovascular and metabolic benefits of dance-based workouts. A study published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine found that dance programs can improve cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular endurance, and overall body composition in participants.

Dancing Requires Energy and Strength

While dance may look effortless on stage, behind every smooth movement lies energy, strength, and coordination. Each time you execute a turn, squat, or leap, you engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Your core muscles stabilize you, your legs and glutes provide power for jumps or quick changes of direction, and your arms help maintain balance and fluidity.

This muscle engagement throughout your whole body will increase your heart rate, leading to a high-calorie burn. In fact, research suggests that cardio dance workouts can be on par with other aerobic exercises such as cycling or jogging when it comes to caloric expenditure. By doing frequent cardio dance sessions, you’ll not only boost your heart health but also tone your body from head to toe.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

Cardio dance also has a positive impact on mental and emotional well-being. When you dance, your brain releases endorphins that act as natural mood elevators. Additionally, the upbeat music and interactive nature of cardio dance classes promote social connectedness and fun, which can reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also acknowledges the role of physical activity in improving mental health and cognitive performance. Dance, in particular, challenges both the mind and body by requiring coordination and memorization of choreography, making it a uniquely holistic workout.

Staying in Shape with Cardio Dance

One of the main advantages of cardio dance is its adaptability. People of all ages and fitness levels can join a class and modify the intensity based on their capabilities. You can dial down or ramp up the intensity of certain moves and choose classes that match your preferred dance style. Over time, you may find your stamina increasing, muscles becoming stronger, and coordination improving. Consistency is key when it comes to staying in shape, and the joy of dancing helps ensure that you’ll return to class again and again.

Tips for Getting Started

Look for a class that matches your music taste and fitness level. Many gyms, dance studios, and online platforms offer various styles, so explore until you find your perfect fit.

Dressing comfortably and preparing properly with your nutrition and hydration will also make sure you have a good experience!

Dance Your Way to Better Health

Cardio dance isn’t just a trend, it’s a scientifically backed workout that boosts heart health, builds strength, and lifts your spirits! If you’ve been searching for a way to stay in shape that doesn’t feel like a chore, this might be the perfect solution. So turn up the music, move to the rhythm, and discover the power of dance. Your heart, your muscles, and your mind will thank you!
